Other Names: Asian Migratory Quail, Coturnix Quail, Eastern Common Quail, Manchurian Quail; domesticated forms known from a host of names that reflect their coloration or size.

Subspecies: Sometimes considered a race of Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A paler form in Siberian is sometimes known as C. j. ussuriensis.

Range: Migratory, breeds in eastern Asia - northern Mongolia, southern Siberia, northern China, Japan and North Korea; winters southern and central China, South Korea, southern Japan, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Introduced to the Hawaiian Islands and Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean.

Habitat: Grasslands

Status in Wild: Despite a very large domesticated population, the wild population is now considered uncommon due to overhunting and habitat loss.
